The United Kingdom had participated only three times in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest up until 2005. The United Kingdom's participation had been organised and broadcast by ITV.

In May 2018, Welsh-language broadcaster S4C announced that Wales would compete as an individual nation at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Minsk, Belarus. Wales entered the competition as a separate nation again in 2019.

In August 2022, the EBU and BBC confirmed that the United Kingdom as a whole would participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Yerevan, Armenia in December 2022 and that the BBC would broadcast the Contest live on CBBC, BBC One and BBC iPlayer. In October 2023, the BBC confirmed that the United Kingdom would again be represented at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Nice, France in November 2023 and that the BBC would broadcast the Contest live on CBBC, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
