In 1996, the eight songs in contention to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest competed in a semi-final round, with previews on various radio and television shows - including a special edition of Top of the Pops on Friday 1st March 1996 - followed by a phone vote. The top four songs were announced on Saturday 2nd March 1996 and went forward to the final on Friday 8th March 1996, another special edition of Top of the Pops styled The Great British Song Contest. The winning entry was announced at the end of the show following a further public phone vote. |
